Meet Dr. Schmidt

Dr. Barbara Schmidt is a 1984 graduate of Purdue University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. Her equine ambulatory practice serves the tri-state area of Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana.  Dr. Schmidt has been a continuous member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association (KVMA), and the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). In 2009 she was elected Chair of the House Advisory Committee of the AVMA House Of Delegates and is the HAC/HOD representative to the AVMA Executive Board.  In 2008 she served as one of two elected Kentucky Delegates in the AVMA House of Delegates. In 2007, Dr. Schmidt was elected to serve on the distinguished House Advisory Committee in the AVMA House of Delegates as the Equine Practice Representative.  She was the first woman and first Kentucky representative elected to serve in this capacity. Dr. Schmidt served a six-year term as Treasurer on the AVMA Board of Directors ending in 2018.   Dr. Schmidt was the KVMA President from 2001-02 and served on their Executive Board for several years. From 1998- 2005 Dr. Schmidt was appointed to serve on the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.  In 2008 she was named Kentucky Veterinarian of the Year by the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association.  In 2015 she was again honored by the KVMA with the Distinguished Service Award.

A Life Member of the American Hanoverian Society, Dr. Schmidt has been elected to serve on the AHS Board of Directors continuously since 1990. She has actively served on several AHS Committees, and hosted AHS Hanoverian Inspections at Bridlewood Farm for many years. She organized AHS annual membership meetings in Lexington, Ky., and was elected to serve as the AHS Board of Director’s Secretary for over a dozen years. Dr Schmidt currently serves as the AHS’s Executive Vice President on their Board of Directors.

In 1990, Dr. Barbara Schmidt and her husband, Frederick Abblett, purchased Bridlewood Farm in Union, Kentucky, to serve as a base for her equine veterinary practice and as a home for their successful Hanoverian breeding operation.  Bridlewood Farm provides stallion services, mare care and foaling, as well as recuperative care. It is also an approved USDA Approved Quarantine/Importation Facility.

Mobile 24/7 Veterinary Care: Our mobile veterinary unit brings our services to your farm for a routine and emergency care.

In-Clinic Services: The veterinary clinic includes a laboratory, complete dispensary and an equine treatment area where state of the art digital x-rays, ultrasound and endoscopic services are provided.

Stallion Services: Aside from collection, preparation and shipping of fresh cooled semen for the farm’s resident stallions, Dr. Schmidt and her staff handle the breeding responsibilities and scheduling for guest stallions.

Breeding, Mare Care and Foaling Services: Bridlewood Farm, located on 25 acres, is well set up for recuperative care as well as breeding and foaling services. Special foaling stalls are equipped with video cameras and the Foal Alert system. Daily services include ultrasonic evaluations, artificial insemination, and the management and treatment of mare fertility issues. Dr. Schmidt and her staff assist clients and their mares throughout the breeding process, pregnancy, delivery and the foals critical first months. Our clients include mare owners all over North America!
